geforce fx5200 low resolutions in 8.10

Hi,
using the standard install I get several resolutions, but with a max of 800x600
using the nvidia driver 173 I only get 640x480 and 320x240

The screen spec is 1280x1024 (LG L1717S)

I have tried Envy but not jockey yet: can't seem to find how to launch that (sorry, very fresh user)

Please check whether you have installed "NVIDIA X-SERVER SETTINGS" in Add or Remove programs.If Not install it and try again.I am using the LG(15") monitor with geforce fx 5200 !! But have not faced problems.... Reply me so that I can help you to the best of my knowledge... Good Luck.. :-)

Thanks but I already tried the nvidia settings: both, from the desktop and by running the command through a terminal window.

I think the problem is in the detection of the monitor. I'm now trying to edit the org file to add a modeline, but I didn't find how to pass the security and save the changes yet

wooohoo,

copied the monitor section into the xorg.conf file, and most of the screen section aswell.
Now I got 1280 by 1024 working perfect with the nv driver (and lots of other options to choose from)
