Enigmail: Enigmime Service not available

Asked by Lars Noodén

Binary package hint: enigmail

I am using Thunderbird on a dual boot system (OS X 10.6 and Ubuntu 10.10)
Both instances of Thunderbird point to the same directory and it works perfectly in either OS X or Ubuntu until enigmail is installed. In Ubuntu, enigmail gives the following error:

Enigmail: Enigmime Service not available

The error message can be gotten rid of by trying to uninstall enigmail in Ubuntu.

Tools->Add-ons->Extensions->Enigmail->Uninstall

That uninstalls enigmail from OS X even though it is done in Ubuntu. Strangely it does not uninstall enigmail in ubuntu but makes it function correctly.

The expected behavior would be for enigmail to be installed and functioning without error regardless of whether I am in OS X or Ubuntu.

$ apt-cache policy enigmail

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#When%20not%20to%20file%20a%20bug. There is also a vibrant support community available at http://askubuntu.com and you might consider asking your question there.

So, this is because the profile enigmail installed in OS X overrides the system enigmail in Ubuntu. If OS X has a system version of enigmail, this would be one solution. Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do to fix this since there is no bug in Ubuntu. If the enigmail xpi from upstream works with Ubuntu and OS X, you could uninstall the system version in Ubuntu and run that. You might want to check out http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/ to see if there is any support for cross-platform profiles.
