How do I get encfs working in ubuntu 8.1

Asked by Ian Brownlie

Hi Guys, I have been trying to get the "easy" encfs working to no avail. Is there a deb package or something that can install it and get it working, I closely followed an installation tutorial about it but all it did was to make a private folder in my 'home' directory. The folder is completely open to anybody who wants to look, it doesn't ask for a pass phrase or anything, it just opens. Failing a deb package is there another system available, a few people use my computer and I really would like to keep my banking transactions private.
    Hoping you can help,
             Ian

Can you try reinstalling it by going up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager

and use one of the search tools to look for "encfs" right click on it and "reinstall" then click on the Synaptic's "Mark all Updates" button and click on "Apply". Hopefully Synaptic will then iron out any difficulties.

Good luck with this and let us know how you got on

Thanks for the reply Tom, but no go. I did what you suggested and still get the same result. However, I guess it could be me, as I have previously explained, I'm no computer whiz and all of this is new to me, if I open a terminal and type 'encfs' what appears is just plain martian to me. Do you know of an encrypter with a GUI for a totally non geek like this old age pensioner.
Thank you again for answering, I guess my only solution is to remove all banking details from my computer. There is no way I'm ever going back to Windows.
       Best regards, Ian

usually typing a command followed by --help gives the context and 'grammer' of how to use the command - a kind of helpful cheat-sheet. In this case into a terminal console just type

encfs --help

Hopefully this will help because i would never have my bank details anywhere near a machine at home so i am fairly clueless about how to get this encryption working - or more to the point how to get it all readable again if anything went wrong at my end! lol

Good luck with this

Hi Tom, I tried what you suggested and got back unrecognised option ' --help'. So thanks again but now I gotta go, we have a raging wildfire heading our way and the authorities are saying we have to get out. So, I don't know when I'll be able to access launchpad again. see ya Ian

I might have forgotten to use "sudo" at the front and you happened to be in SuperUser mode 2nd time you tried it. Anyway glad to hear it worked this time and even happier to here you are safe from the wild-fire.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
