What is needed to get MSN audio/video working

Asked by Tony Pursell

I am trying to get Audio & Video working in Empathy with MSN. The Empathy FAQ say it should work but I do not see the icons which should show an MSN contact has Audio & Video and the Audio & Video options are greyed out in the Contact menu.

I am using Empathy on a computer running Karmic 9.10. The contact with a webcam is on Windows XP using Windows Live Messenger 14.0

Webcam works in Cheese. I dont have aMSN installed on this PC, but I have it on another PC with Karmic and it does not work either in full AV mode. As Empathy is the 'official' package, I want to see if that works first. (I see being able to do full A/V chat as an important thing for Ubuntu. Currently I have to go back into Windows when my brother comes on line and I could never be able to convert my wife to Ubuntu if she couldn't see and hear her grandson in Australia.).

The point is that nothing works. I cannot even see that there is a webcam on the contact as shown here

http://library.gnome.org/users/empathy/stable/audio-video.html.en_GB

which also says MSN is supported

I would like to get at least as far a seeing that my contact has a webcam before going on to tackle any problems with my webcam.

there is no 'oficial' package. Such a thing doesn't exist. Yes there are default app but it doesnt make them any more superior to any other apps.

You can also try emesene, both emesene are on the repos and installable for you to try.
