Empathy will not create chat rooms

Asked by Bruce Crowther

I have just updated to Karmic, and cannot create a chat "room", so I cannot hold three or more way conversations.
Following the instructions in the Empathy help file does not help: I select the account I want to use, give the room a name, and then the "join" button at the bottom of the dialog box highlights. When I click join, the box disappears, and precisely nothing happens. "Invite to chatroom" remains ghosted on all my contacts.
Is there any cure, or is it back to the future with Pidgin to solve this?

I read the FAQ's, and found nothing there to help.

I wondered if I had a problem with my /home partition being about four or five versions of Ubuntu old, so I blew away my updated OS, and did a clean install of 64 Bit Karmic, including formatting /home, to remove any old, maybe conflicting files.

I still have the same problem, if I want to have a 3-way chat, I have to fire up either FF or Chrome, and use the Gtalk gadget in Gmail, because I can't create a "Room" using Empathy. If someone invites me to join a chatroom I can join in via Empathy, but I can't create a room from my machine.

I am using the latest and greatest Empathy I can get from the PPA: 2.28.1.1. Any help, anyone?

Kind regards,
Bruce.

I've learned from the #empathy IRC channel that this functionality requires Empathy 2.29.3 and telepathy-gabble 0.9.

In the meantime -- until these hit the repositories -- in the "Server" field of the Room -> Join dialog, you can enter conference.jabber.org along with any room name you choose, and it should work.

By crikey! That does work.

Thank you, TopdownJimmy,

On the other hand, you can't invite people who are using Gmail's native chat interface to the rooms you create using this method. Pidgin users and Empathy users can be invited, however.
