Webcam Issue in Ubuntu 11.04

Asked by Scott Andersen on 2012-08-31

I installed a clean copy of Ubuntu 10.10 (reformatted the drive and wiped out windows), which went flawlessly.

I then upgraded to 11.04, which also went flawlessly.

In Empathy during chat sessions, the video call and audio call options are not available.

To see if my webcam was working, I installed Cheese.

Webcam works fine in Cheese. As another check, I installed Kopete.

Under preferences, my webcam appears to be working fine, however, in a chat session, I get the message about not finding Jasper.

So I installed it (correctly, I think).

I still get the message about not finding Jasper.

I checked again in Empathy, and still, the options for video and audio (as well as file sharing) are not available. Am I missing something?

My webcam is a Logitech HD C270 cam, which is listed in the UVC database.

I'd like to get this resolved as I refuse to go back to windows just for online chatting.

I do not want to install Ubuntu 12 as I do not like the interface, nor do I want to upgrade to 11.10 as I couldn't find an option to boot classic ubuntu.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Scott

Can you give the output of:

lsb_release -a; uname -a; lsusb

Thanks

Have you considered a clean install of Precise (Ubuntu 12.04). Natty (Ubuntu 11.04) is EOL really soon

I've tried 12.04, I don't like the desktop. I prefer the classic ubuntu interface.

You are not forced to use Unity in Precise. Did you SERIOUSLY think that....really?

I have the same camera, there has been a problem with the USB sound module accessing the cameras microfon and blocking the device. This has been fixed in Ubuntu 12.04.
So, you have the option to upgrade or blacklist the snd_usb_audio module, which would disable all USB sound devices.

If you run cheese, do you see yourself?

I did a fresh install of 12.04 and even with the fallback desktop, I hate it. Everything runs slower. Even with the classic ubuntu with no effects. Anyway, yes, my cam works in Cheese. Always has, even in 11.04. Haven't yet tried Empathy in 12.04 yet. As far as the chat rooms, it appears to be an issue with the chat room itself, as I can go to other online chat rooms and my cam works fine.

As far as 12.04, what the hell were the develpers thinking when they came up with this monstrosity??? I want to say it's a fallback to windows, but I won't be that cruel. However, it's definitely a step in the wrong direction. I have to install this, install that, create this directory, etc...when in 11.04, everything was just a few clicks away. Such as changing my theme. This is going to take a lot of getting used to.

Then try XFCE...there are more desktps than gnome

Gonna stay with Ubuntu...already getting used to the differences. Not too bad.
