win7 installation

when installing ubuntu 11.1 on a win 7 laptop (dell) the partioner will not no anything to the win partition ,you cant even do a check on it ,it just flags up an error

I suggest you chkdsk the partition so you know the NTFS is healthy.
I also suggest you resize the NTFS partition within Windows and install to the free space.

you probably have the professional or ulitmate version. those attempt to prevent tampering by virii.
you'll have to repartition with windoze then install ubuntu.

Yes Win7 can resize it's own partitions. Make sure your backups are up to date before you start, in case of catastrophe

thanks for that ,i have not tried the solution to date ,but now i know the problem and fixes i hope to use it for future occurencies when using win 7
