Empathy Log In Problem: Facebook

When I try to log into Empathy it allows me to see users nearby but won't sync to my facebook account. It says there is a network error but other people using my server (in university halls of residence) can log in fine with their facebook details.
I got a username and tried to get it to work through that. I've tried on several occasions to get it to work but nothing seems to work.

lsb_release -a; apt-cache policy empathy

same here :

$ lsb_release -a

Could try this ppa to get a later veriosn: https://launchpad.net/~telepathy/+archive/ppa?field.series_filter=natty
