Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty is no longer supported. I recommend you upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid or Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick. (You cannot upgrade directly to Maverick in the Update Manager; you'd have to upgrade to Lucid first. Maverick is a later release than Lucid and has some newer features, but Lucid is a Long Term Support release, so it's supported even longer than Maverick.)

With that said, this forum thread provides some solutions that work some of the time in addressing the problem you're experiencing:

If you cannot get Empathy to work you could see if Pidgin works.

But again, I underscore that you should upgrade to a newer Ubuntu release. Ubuntu 9.04 no longer receives important updates (including security updates), and is not supported by Canonical, nor is it supported on this forum, in the IRC channel, and so forth.

Jaunty is no longer supported in any way as Jaunty is EOL (End of life).

I suggest you upgrade to Lucid, Maverick or Natty (Natty is released in April 2011).

"want to go back to Microsoft!! Can someone try to help me?"

Removing Ubuntu is a separate topic from your Empathy problem; please feel free to post a separate question about that.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask gustav for more information if necessary.
