I am unable to save changes made to the preferences. It keeps reverting back to the default preferences.

Binary package hint: empathy

Everytime I go under preferences and change some settings, close out and re-open the preferences, everything has reverted back to the default setup. Is there any way to resolve this? I really dislike tabbed messaging and pop-up notifications.
