Encoding cyrillic messages with icq account

Asked by Stanimir Mladenov

Hi, when i send something in Cyrillic to someone with windows via icq account, they get the meaningless text.
Here is an example:

Sending 'test'/'тест' in Latin/Cyrrilic.
Receiving 'test'/'тест'

Any ideas what should i change to let others receive my text messages properly?

Perhaps they should install Cyrillic support. I often use the Cyrillic layout and so far no one complained about it.

Do you use Qwerty keyboard? Also check your sysencoding > input methods in empathy, it should be set to IBus by default. You should add Keyboard Layout for the language you are trying to use.

Qwerty it is.
However, I didn't find sysencoding in empathy anywhere and I just searched in the account settings for ICQ discovering Character set: UTF-8
I will try to change it to something more specific like Windows-1251 and it may work.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Did you try to add keyboard layout? System / Preferences / Keyboard > tab / Layouts /. I'm using this feature for quite long time and I've never had a problem with encoding.

After you encouraged me to look under the ICQ account settings I change the Cahracter set to Windows-1251 and the guy who didn't receive my Cyrillic correctly now reads it without problem.
To answer your last question.
I do have Cyrillic layout and was sending messages in cyrillic to my friend. Now everything is fine.

Thanks again for your help Pako!
