Cannot register into an ekiga account

Asked by Leonidstachenko

Unlike Kaliope, Ekiga simply refuses to register my sip:<email address hidden> account.I have tried a second user name lensta001with no success.
I also tried to send a call to myself . I got a call sound that never stopped although i tried to diconnect the call which it did not do . I logged out and restarted the session to get rid of the sound. I do not have,as yet,a video webcam but will shortly purchase one . probably logitech quickcam pro 4000.. With regard to the latter, I see from the forum that some users do not get any video pictures, Has this been solved.?. A quick answer would be appreciated.I am using ubuntu 6.06 dapper. and an alsa sound card.
Leonid,

Thanks for your question.

Do you use any SIP Proxy? Please double check your Ekiga preferences. If so, please remove it and test again.

Do you use any kind of firewall? A NAT-router for example? It might be worth the try to add a STUN server to your settings, e.g. stun.ekiga.net

I don't believe that i have a firewall of any sort. i am not quite sure what you mean by adding a stun server to my settings. do you mean that I should open the account window and add stun.ekiga.net as an account? How should i fill in the rest of the slots?.
Meanwhile, I tried to register a third account lensta002 with another password. This time I no longer get the forbidden notice at the bottom of the call window, however in the account window i get registration failed for this new account with new properties. Furthermore whwn trying to call to mysel with the new username "lensta002" I heard into my headphone the busy tone phone which stopped after a few notes . All of this is registered in the general history with the mention of abnormal call termiation.
Thanks again Markus for the enquiry . I am sorry to say that don't feel too be very helpful .
I understand that without me regisrered there is no way to send or recieve a call. Ttue.?

Before i sign off for today, I am puzzled to see that the ekiga.net SIP Service has also a failed registration status. Could this be a clue? Finally, I might mention that in booting up ubuntu, the PCMCIA failed. I don't know what this means . Could it have some bearing?

 Hi Markus,
I just looked into my email inbox, surprised to find nothing. Checked
into the junk file and found all the correspondence with Ekiga. I have
no idea how these messages got into there automatically with no
notification. So I do have confirmation of registration. I believe the
problem is now solved. I'll follow the procedure indicated. What should i
do to prevent your mail and ekiga from being dumped into the junk file
automatically? All I have done now is to click on nojunk .
Well, I feel so awkward to have taken up your precious time on a silly
and unfortunate slip.
Many thanks again,
Leonid Stachtchenko.

I'm glad the problem is solved now (please don't forget to mark is as such).

Just to add a few information: You'll find a description of STUN at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STUN. In short, it helps the SIP protocol used by Ekiga to get through your firewall. As you might not have one, just don't care about it :-)

Since you marked the Ekiga Mails as Nojunk, you should not experience any further problems with that. Besides that, Ekiga does not send to much mails. I even can't remember receiving any Ekiga mail besides the registration confirmation.

Don't be concerned about the time we spent on this issue. Just think the other way: You're for sure not the first person experiencing this issue and I'm afraid not the last one. So it would be a good idea to "whitelist" Ekiga mails for evolutions within the standard installation. As the standard installation does not have any whitelists and the Gnome team is working hard on improving evolutions anti-spam capabilities I'll wait with that feature request until the Gnome project has done all the basic work.

So you see: nearly every single question helps improving ubuntu. Welcome to the project :-)
