Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs .

Yes, it's been removed from the default install.

For the time being at least, Empathy has replaced both Pidgin and Ekiga.

manzur, as Chris writes, Empathy is the go-to solution for voice chat:

wokay, empathy looks good, when is it going to replace pidgin, or better, when is it going to support camera and audio perfectly?

as Chris wrote, Empathy will probably replace both Ekiga and Pidgin for the release of Karmic.

In a related question, since Empathy will be replacing Ekiga as well, has the problem with Empathy not being able to connect to Ekiga been solved at least for Karmic? ('Coz it still isn't in Jaunty)

AFAIK, Empathy is severely broken with the SIP protocol:

SIP calls no longer work (Incompatibility with telepathy-sofiasip)
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/telepathy-sofiasip/+bug/409103

Empathy do not support NAT for SIP: NAT traversal for SIP using Empathy
https://bugs.launchpad.net/telepathy-sofiasip/+bug/294994

SIP/Ekiga accounts don't store contacts
https://bugs.launchpad.net/telepathy-sofiasip/+bug/294991

IMHO, SIP protocol is just broken in the Karmic default install...

Best regards,
Yannick

You can also follow this "bug": Replace Pidgin and Ekiga with Empathy
