Is ekiga 2.0.12 compatible with Zfone?

Asked by Robert Parks on 2009-03-08

I'm new to SIP, and I'm wondering if anyone can state definitively whether ekiga 2.0.12, packaged with Ubuntu 8.10, is compatible with Zfone (zfoneproject.com)? If so, are there any settings that I have to change within either ekiga or Zfone from their defaults, in order to ensure that my voice stream is encrypted? Does ekiga use a Variable Bit Rate (VBR) codec by default, and if so, which one should I be using? Thanks in advance for any help that you're able to provide.

I am not sure, to be honest.

The only thing that wants to make me believe is this thread:
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnomemeeting-list/2006-June/msg00004.html in that Ekiga is using the default port; however, this may cause interference all together.

If you want to use Zfone, and not another client, have you thought about Gizmo? I could not find any documentation to support Ekiga & Zfone, only Gizmo and Zfone.

Gizmo & Zfone:

I'm sorry this was not the answer you were looking for. However, I will keep looking.

As a definitive answer, straight from Ekiga, it does not support Zfone at this time:

Also, I will tell you that Gizmo does. Skype also does excellent encryption (the government claims it can not tap it). Skype does not need Zfone because it uses its own "built-in" encryption protocols.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Craig H.

Hello,

You made a confusion:
zphone is a standalone application which encrypt SIP communications using the ZRTP protocol.
The mail you refers to is about a native support of the ZRTP protocol inside Ekiga.

Maybe zphone do work with Ekiga, you need to try it. (theoretically zphone should work with Ekiga 3.x and maybe with 2.x)

Best regards,
Yannick
