incoming call rings pc speaker

Asked by eugenia

The answer seems to assume I am referring to Skype.

The question is about Ekiga

I am presently having troubles getting it to work properly (Firestarter issues possibly?) but it is not worth persisting unless an incoming call to Ekiga can be made to ring my PC Speaker if I leave the earphones plugged in.

How is this done?

"I'm sure this is not new and is the greatest annoyance with Skype for linux.

I use headphones with attached boom mike. They are practical, hands free and it solves the feedback issues.

It is not practical to have to get behind the PC and pull out the leads everytime I leave the computer and then try to plug them back in when a call is received.

I have a PC Speaker which shows up in my Device Manager. (/dev/input/event3)

Is there any reason why an incoming call cannot make this speaker ring in exactly the same way that Skype will ring the same speaker if the computer is booted with Windows?"

This appears to be an issue with Skype for Linux, that does not have an option in Tools/Options/Sound Devices to use the PC Speaker when ringing.
I would consider to request at the Skype Linux forum for this functionality.
I cannot think of a workaround to get this work with the current state of Skype.

It is important to voice these issues at Skype Linux, so that the company makes a better effort supporting the Linux versions.

Ekiga isn't able to ring the PC speaker. You might want to file a feature request within launchpad? I think it's an important feature.

I know this is an Old Thread, but it shows up almost #1 when searching for this issue for Skype.

For those that want to get this working in Skype. This is what I did to workaround the Skype problem when someone calls and the PC Speaker doesn't ring..

Unfortunately, the link does not work. The matter is still pertinent - I have the same Skype issue on Karmic Koala as I write.

Apologies for the broken link, the domain was changed due to cable.nu not updating their DNS servers.

Here's the same article on the new link:

I hope it gives you some ideas.

Thank you, it is now clear. I am curious to see what happens on 10.04 when I download it.

Can you help with this problem?
