how to call pc-to-pc with msn users

Asked by achevrier

Hello,
I would like to use Erika to make pc-to-pc calls with xp msn users located in the other side of the planet.
I don't know how to configure Erika. I have already a msn identification (from the time I used xp ...).
Is there a way to connect myself with msn users towards pc-to-pc calls ?
Thanks a lot for your help.

I don't think you can do that, unless msn supports SIP or H.323 protocols.

You can with users that use Netmeeting but not MSN.

I have tried using Kopete's netmeeting, however the camera works but no voice.

If you told some of your friends to install Gizmo project, you will be able to do pc-to-pc calls this way.

As of yet I dont know any packages which allow voice over msn

Ok,
Maybe Skype should be an alternative choice ?
It should be quite easy to install on Ubuntu, I hope (could you confirm ?). As it is easy on xp platform, If I succeed to install it on Ubuntu, I could solve the problem in that way.

Skype official website does not ship .deb packages for Ubuntu. You have to download a binary package, but it shouldn't be too much difficult to install.

You can't talk to MSN users using the MSN network using Ekiga.

You can talk to people using the Windows Messenger program using Ekiga in either voip or h323 (netmeeting) mode. The Messenger user will need to sign up for a SIP account though - they can even do this on ekiga.net I believe.

I'm trying to check how to install skype and if it is secured. From now, I have read there are some trouble using and instaling skype with ubuntu. So, I need 3 or 5 days to check it, before go back to this discussion. If I can't succeed in using PC to PC calls with msn or skype xp users, (it is very very important for me), then I will go back to you and will try to find a solution.
Could I suggest to wait for this delay before closing ?
If not, do not hesitate to ask me to close.

Yes Skype does distribute deb packages from their site, super easy to install, just download to your desktop, and double click then choose install.

http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/

Also they have a new beta version out, 1.3, about to DL now to test :-)

Just wanted to say that I tested the beta version with Edgy, and it is working perfectly, haven't tested the file transfer yet, or on Dapper. But the entire 1.5hr conversation with my mom worked perfectly. It seems that the beta has a TON of bugfixes, and some added features too. Take a look at the changelog here http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/changelog.html
And hopefully everything works out well for you.

If you want to install skype on Ubuntu then do this:

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

then add

## skype (official)
## only uncomment it if you need it
deb http://download.skype.com/linux/repos/debian/ stable non-free

save changes, then close and

sudo apt-get update

then finally

sudo apt-get install skype

If you are going to try Skype DEFINITELY go with the beta 1.3 version. This version uses alsa unlike the 1.2 version and so you're much less likely to run into sound issues.
