In Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid efax-gtk is into universe repositories....

Please first enable the universe repository:

Open System → Administration → Software sources → [ Tab Ubuntu software ]
enable "Community Maintained open source software (universe)"
Close and confirm the repository reload.

Then open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install efax-gtk

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hope this helps

marcobra, I'd love to use your advise, but unfortunately, ubuntu is presenting me with its stupidity again. I want to upgrade to 8.10, but it tells me that in order to upgrade I got to install packages that I had uninstalled in 8.04, and don't want installed back again. If you know of a solution to this, I'd love to use it. Then, I can use your advise concerning efax.

I think you can do it via dselect

Type "sudo dselect" into the terminal and then select "Select".

Search for the packages that you want by typing /.

Press = on the packages that you want to hold.

Press Enter and select Configure and then quit.

Restart update manager

and try...

Bhavani, why are you giving me the same solution to two different problems? You gave me the same "solution" to another problem I had in another thread. Can you explain why you're doing this?
