need to recover my encrypted home after hard shutdown

Asked by Lionel Sabatier

After an accidental hard shut down, some files must have gotten corrupted preventing me from accessing my home. I have spent days reading on how to recover my files, here is what i have done so far :

I have tried to mount a private folder with my home in it running "ecryptfs-mount-private" gave me an error. I then tried to recover my private folder using this command "ecryptfs-recover-private" after searching for my private directories, it concluded that i didn't have any and asked me to check if they are mounted. I am sure i have an ecrypted directory hence the reason behind why i can't access home. i am also sure it is mounted as i ran the proper commands to verify so. I do not recall ever configuring a passphrase. i remember ubuntu nagging about chosing a passphrase for times like these, i don't remember if i set it up or not.
using the command "ecryptfs-unwrap-passphrase" and selecting the file located in /mnt/home/.ecryptfs/lionel/.ecryptfs/wrapped-passphrase" I desperately attempted every password i've ever used in vain. keeps giving me the following error "Error: Unwrapping passphrase failed -5"

ecryptfs-recover-private can't find my encrypted folder.
I haven't managed to unwrap my passphrase.
I still don't have access to my home.

I beg you, anyone of you, to help me retrieve my data because I don't have a back up and I've been deprived of it for weeks, I really need your help.

I don't want to upset you but without backups there is a good chance the data is lost forever.

The level of encryption is high and without knowing the pass phrase it will be almost impossible to get it back

Why do you not have a backup?

Take a look here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EncryptedPrivateDirectory
It may help but unless you can remember/find your pass phrase it may be a long shot.

Is it a girls name or a song lyric for example or a line from a poem? Only you will be able to guess it.

Can you help with this problem?
