How to install eccodes 2.6 from ubuntu repository?

Asked by İsmail SEZEN

Hello,

I've installed ubuntu 17 (artful). When I installed the eccodes from the repository, it installs 2.4 version. Also, This version somehow is not compatible with the bufr files that I have. bufr_dump tool can not read the messages in the buffer file. So, I need to install version 2.6. Before installing it from source, I would like to ask if it is possible to install active development release (eccodes 2.6) from repository?

Thanks,

isezen

Artful is Ubuntu 17.10 not 17

What package will give you the version you require?

* Excuse my negligence. Correction: I've installed Ubuntu 17.10 (artful)

At the bottom of the page [1], the current stable release is eccodes 2.4.1-1. If I try to install by 'apt install', eccodes version 2.4.1-1 is installed. But I need to install eccodes 2.6.0 (it's marked as active development at the same page).

1- https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eccodes

It seems that you misinterpret the information on https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eccodes

The words "active development" refer to Ubuntu 18.04 bionic beaver and are not related to eccodes at all.
And "current stable release" is the status of Ubuntu 17.10 Artful Aardvark, and again not related to eccodes.

Ubuntu 18.04 will probably contain eccodes 2.6

As far as I can see there are certain dependencies in the eccodes 2.6 packages that are not met by the software provided for Ubuntu 17.10. If you want to have the eccodes 2.6 package on artful, then this requires that certain other packages are upgraded in artful first.

You could consider a test installation of Ubuntu 18.04 (e.g. in a virtual environment) to have access to eccodes 2.6

Ah, it makes sense now, I should study more the distros and releases :)

I can build eccodes from source. I was only trying to make it more accessible for others.

Thank you Manfred
