Brother MFC-3240C printer, mfc3240clpr package, consistant error

Asked by Steve Glines

I attempted to install drivers for a Brother MFC-3240C printer but the install bombed now all I get when I run apt-get is this error:
E: The package mfc3240clpr needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.

I've followed all the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PackageManagerTroubleshootingProcedure

I should be able to just get rid of the reference.

Go to the brother site and redowload the deb, then use:

sudo dpkg --force-all -i filename.deb

to reinstall the deb

I've downloaded the deb package from Brother twice. It's broken. when I run
sudo dpkg --force-all -i filename.deb

all I get are errors. It bombs half way through the install. I need a way to forcibly remove references to mfc3240clpr withiout having a good mfc3240clpr deb.
