cannot open excel file it cant be accessed

Asked by rasoul

Dear Reader,

About one year ago I saved my thesis essential documents containing Excel documents on a CD (Compact Disk recordable; 52X multi speed). Then I checked the CD. All the files would open correctly. But now I cannot open most of the excel files except a few from the CD. Microsoft Excel error is " 'file name.xls' cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or you may trying to access a read-only location. Or, the server the document is stored on may not be responding". when I click cancel, another error appears: " Cannot access 'file name.xls' ". I do not think the files have been damaged because, when I open the properties the size on disk has not be changed. Furthermore I have tried "open and repair" option opening the files, but it was useless. It is needed to say these files cannot be copied either. The copying error is: " Cannot copy filename: Cannot read from the source file or disk.". I will be so appreciated if you can help me opening the files. They are so essential for me.

Sincerely Rasoul Abbasi

While it is true that if you saved the files on a CDR (not a CDRW) they can't be written to and will have to be opened as 'read-only', you should be able to view the contents. You say you clicked on cancel - have you tried just opening them as read only? If you need to be able to change the contents, try using 'save-as' option and saving it to you hard drive. Or is it possible to open and repair and then save repaired file to hard drive?

Can you help with this problem?
