Need more information: how are the computers connected, using a router or direct from one to the other?

i connected them with a croosover cable. the new one is a cd2 with everything on it, however the old one is a amd quite old. there is not a usb or cd record or anything from this century. i tried to stablish a connection but they are not reading each other. what to do?

Most of the difficulties lie with the firewalls, now Windows is notorious for being difficult to connect with other computers, so be patient I will try to get you through this.

I assume you have XP, and hopefully some firewall other than the XP version, Widows 98 has no built in firewall.

Now Ubuntu does have a firewall, but you need to install Firestarter to access it:

Go to System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager
There search for Firestarter and install it. Do this first and get back here

i am affraid do say that it's working with 98 yet, but i'd disabillited the firewall already. i friend of mine just got here and he gave me another option. take off the hd and install it in another computer to make a cd with the files i need. i guess it'll wor faster.
but i must confess that i'm quite surprised with people like who wants to help other guys like me fixing this kind of problem and i promiss start reading a little bit more about this os. it's brand new to me.
tnx one more time ealthuis.

If you have XP, turn the firewall off, if you have another firewall try to adjust it to allow another user access to the computer. Firewalls are set up to let no one in, this has to be changed to allow the other computer access.

If you have not done so already, give each computer a name (an easy one), also set each to the SAME workgroup, Windows will suggest MSHOME, leave that or change it to something you like.

Now on the Linux computer open Firestarter an go th the tab Policyclick in the field :Allow connections from host" the click "Add Rule", on the next screen enter name of Windows computer and click on Add. then click on "Apply Policy. Close firestarter.

On the Windows computer set the required directory to filesharing, then on the Linux computer click on connect to Server in the Places menu and enter someting like this:

Service type Windows share, Server: the name of the Windows computer, In Folder the name af the folder you just shared, then your username, then domain name, which is the common workgroup, then click on connect. You will be asked for (your user name and) a password and if you are lucky you will see the folder you asked for displayed.
