How do you reduce the size of the image from over 1 MB to 200kb?

I can't find any menu option that allows me to reduce the size of a downloaded camera photo. Most of them are over 1.5 MB which is too big for emailing. I want to reduce my images to no more than, say, 100kb.

You can use Imagemagick or Gimp for this. You will have to install these applications though.

Check out by converting it's type. Usually png and jpg images have less size than any bmp images. But may give poor quality.

Or you can reduce; your cams pixels that will also reduce image size.

For changing image type. In Gimp's File menu there is "Save As" option. Shortcut Key is Ctrl+Atl+S
Not sure about shortcut key. But the menu works fine.

If you haven't already got gimp in

Applications - Graphics - Gimp

then got up to the top taskbar again and click on

System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager is near the end of the sub-menu

It asks for your normal user password, not your SuperUser/Root one. Use either search tool to find "Gimp" and use the right click menu to install it and click on the "Apply" button.

In gimp go up to the "File" menu and "Save As..." in the top box of that just change the ending to ".png", ".gif" or something like that. If you've gone for ".jpeg" or something like that then you might also need to use another option after you've clicked on the "save" button in that dialogue box.

Yes, Thank you Tom, and "Master", and Deapesh. Gimp was the way to go. I opened the original image and then accessed the "Image" drop-down menu and selected the "Scale Image" option. The image size was set to a Width of 2828 pixels and a Height of 2136 pixels. I reduced the Width to 1000 pixels and automatically the Height was reduced to 750 pixels. When I saved the image it had reduced from its original size of 1.4MB to 194KB, which is much more suitable for emailing.

Brilliant, nicely done. A lot more complex than i was thinking about and probably much better result for that. Thanks for getting back to us with the answer that worked and thanks again for giving me credit for it
