Mounting hard drives

Asked by Rhett Weathers

I am using Kubuntu Gutsy on a Windows XP dual boot machine. I have three hard drives, two of which I keep my data on. ie Media Files. First, I can not mount my (Windows) hard drives for use (hal-storage-fixed-mount-all-options refused uid 1000) and I would like at least my Media Files Hard Drive to mount automatically for use when I am using Kubuntu. How do I accomplish this?

Unfortunately, I can not tell you.
Now, I can not start Kubuntu. I tried to install updated ATI Driver using http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Gutsy_Installation_Guide. I used Method 1 first and was unable verify installation by fglrxinfo after installation, so I followed the instructions for Method 2 (removing the recommended files) and now I can not start Kubuntu. Started after; sudo aticonfig --initial --force & sudo aticonfig --overlay-type=Xv. I restarted to finish the installation and now I can get to my Login Screen, which partly materializes graphically (turns blue, I can see the white box where usernames are supposed to be) but then it freezes. I tried to boot to command line to restore my backup of xorg.conf but that gives me an Error 78...or something, "Press any key." which starts re-boot. I am going to have to re-install again for the 100,000,000,000 time!
Problems I have had:
ATI Drivers never work. I have two monitors and the only time I have had them working was using a driver Eons old, using this method and driver; http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=575843. I then used this method http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=301941 to get my two monitors to work correctly. It took me MONTHS to get this to work but it did, and very well.
KDE Art packages do not work correctly, there are unresolvable dependencies. Every package manager I have used on every PC I have installed it on, has said basically the same thing. The installation goes bad every time and I end up having to use; sudo dpkg --configure -a & sudo aptitude install -r, to fix the bad install in every instance and re-install the packages that did not install, minus the KDE Art packages that have the unresolvable dependency problems.
I am unable to use my Brother MFC 8500 to scan. I have looked for weeks trying to figure out just how to begin this and I can not find any information. I have not yet asked in a forum but it seems to me like there should be someplace with some information. I can not be the only one with a scanner that is not recognized and needs setting up. I certainly found plenty of peopIe with printer problems. If it is anything like this Video Driver debacle I guess it will be some time next year before I'll have a working installation.
Thing is, I have a computer building hobby. I have made three computers in the last few months. I have three and there are two more in my household. I have two that I run a business with. I want to get away from Windows because it is breaking the bank and the software (Vista and the new Office Suite) sucks. (I still use XP, dual booted with Kubuntu) I have been trying to get Kubuntu at least useable so I can put it on other PCs particularly ones I am building for other people so they know there is something other that Windows out there but I am working for months to get something I can reasonably recommend and there are some things like a scanner that I have to use for work that I can not spend this kind of time and resources on.
I built a PC for my daughter who is in her first year of College. I told her that I built her a PC with dual boot Linux/XP on it because Kubuntu was much more suited for her and school. I purchased all Linux compatible hardware but now I can not get the same ATI Drivers to work on my PC, I am not about to put it on hers. I'll still have to figure out her TV Tuner card and Media Center w remote control, wireless networking and and I-pod. I just don't know if I have the patience for this. I'd like to get it to her in working order sometime before she graduates.
I am venting my frustrations here but I am extremely aggravated at the moment.
I tried to report the KDE Art problem as a bug. It has happened on every PC I have tried to put it on, four to be exact. But I do not know what some of the questions mean?
I'll re-install tomorrow and tell you what my fstab file looks like. Thanks for answering. I do appreciate the help.

ok

Maybe you already know of all this but:

When you wanna install the driver for your video card i would sugest you to use the restricted drivers manager.

Regarding your printer/scanner you can try and use this link and see if it helps you

I have tried the restricted drivers manager and it works fine on one monitor. If I try to set up dual monitors to use Big Desktop I usually get an unrecoverable black screen. I can restore my backup of xorg.conf and it does not resolve the problem. That's why I started trying the downloaded drivers and compiling.
I have looked at the brother site. That process does not work either and Brother does not support.
Basically, I am insane. I keep doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result. Not really, I try the same thing a million different ways. I follow all the instructions, FAQs, troubleshooting. It usually comes down to things get so screwed up I have to re-install the OS from scratch and never get the problems resolved. It is not for a lack of trying. It is a lack of time. I can not devote endless hours to trying to solve one of several issues. If I manage to solve one after days or weeks the I have to do the same seemingly endless process on the next problem.
Thanks for the suggestions.

No problem, sorry that they didn't do any good.

What about your mounting problem?
Your fstab file?

Can you help with this problem?
