I also see this (Failed to connect to the camera. Please make sure it is connected properly and turned on. Would you like to try again?) THANKS

I have the camera installed properly and I also have it on. DAH

DigiKam is using gphoto2 to interface with a camera. The DMC-FZ15 is officially not yet supported by gphoto2. Maybe that's the problem.
As an alternative, can you switch your camera into PTP mode? That will work in any case.
Latest version is libgphoto2 2.4.0

Thanks Michun, that solved my question.
