desktop effects are not working

Hi All

 I am using AMD atholon 64*2 dual core processor and wide screen (view sonic)... I have installed nvidia in my system. If I try to enable Desktop effects in my system,It just display a blank screen. After a minute the screen is returned with out desktop effects..
