any chance to use the deskbar applet in natty without going back to the classic desktop?

I believe the unity desktop is quite constrained with the panel, if you boot to classic desktop and tell the OS to load the unity bar you should be able to tweak the top bar that way (you may want to move the windows list to the top bar / change the bars so it looks like unity).
