Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get install ddrescue

I did and got the message that package could not be found.

I am new to ubuntu and thought I may be doing something wrong.

go to System->Administration->Software Sources

make sure the Universe repo is enabled and try again. i checked and the package is in the Universe repository.

Hi

Activate Synaptic. In the search field enter ddrescue. The software is available.
