Unable to edit CR2 Raw files. I've tried everything. I'm a newbie using Ubuntu-Studio 12-04. Please HELP!!!

Asked by Daniel Marques Augusto Correia Peres on 2012-07-07

Hello

I bought a Canon 650d and it shoots in CR2 Raw format. I've tried all the most popular image editors - from Gimp, to Ufraw, Rawtherapee, digikam, studiorae, darktable etc. - and they all present the same error: an ugly pink skin which totally covers the image.

It seemed like that darktable ppa - "sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pmjdebruijn/darktable-release-plus" - should solve the problem, but despite the update it remains!
I'm new in Linux, but I've been searching, and searching, and searching, for answers to this problem. I've already created a PGP key. Has it something to do with the ubuntu keyserver?...I'm lost. Please help me with this...

Best regards,
Daniel Peres

If you have software centre /synaptic open or are installing updates it will cause this and you should let the processes finish so you can then close the app, this frees the packages. Then retry.

If not then run:

sudo fuser -vki /var/lib/dpkg/lock;sudo dpkg --configure -a

To free them up and fix any package issues.

Hello. Thank your prompt response. I'm very glad and impressed!...

Yes, after closing the updaters I was able to install de ppa...but the problem remains the same!...I'm still not able to open CR2 Raw files correctly. The "pink error" remains...

Daniel Peres

I notice this is happening with all dcraw, ufraw and similar applications, it seems to be the support (or lack of) of the 650D itself in Linux rather than a bug in any particular software.
On darktable specific it shows

Unable to find camera in database: Canon Canon EOS Kiss X6i

Please upload file to ftp.rawstudio.org, thanks!

Trying to FTP to that address fails so I have uploaded a sample images to http://lizquilty.com/uploads/sample/

Interestingly, the previews of half my images shows up without the pink, but the image itself is pink when loaded. When i click on the image, it loads normally, then overlays the pink.

Same thing here (got a 650D/T4i and can't open a RAW in Rawtherapee, Photivo or UFRaw without this pinkish layer).

This is because the ICC Profile for this camera is still not supported in these software. It is in the newest version of dcraw, which they all use in the background, but the frontends have to be recompiled with the newer dcraw versions for the 650D to be supported.

Just wait for a newer version of your preferred frontend and it should hopefully support the 650D.

Hello,

owner of 650d too, I cannot use RawTherapee 4.0.9.50 on Windows Vista.
Same " ugly pink skin " on all the Raw I want to use.

7 months later, maybe someone have hints to fix this...

Please keep me inform.

Thank you by advance.

PS : Good work on all project developped.

I have edited and recompiled the ufraw which allows you access to convert them using that at http://lizquilty.com/2012/07/09/new-camera-canon-eos-650d-aka-kiss-x6i-linux-and-pink-ufraw-fun/ - the changes were in the SVN for that so just need to filter through into repos i imagine. until then feel free to grab and compile mine (it was fairly easy)

Can you help with this problem?
