How do I fix the SASL screw up with version upgrade

Asked by norbie

After a release upgrade of the 32 Bit Server, my e-mail server is totally screwed up. The SASL daemon doesn't start anymore, postfix has a problem and dovecot doesn't run anymore. The automatic crash reporter fails to start and possibly a number of other things not discovered yet.
My perfectly working Proftpd doesn't want to run anymore even after a complete removal and re-install.
This in my opinion is unacceptable, even with free software!
If the release isn't ready for upgrade, don't release it. Many of us are dummies and know only enough to be dangerous.
What it means to me is that I have to spend days of un-installing, re-installing and re-configuring in the meantime the system is seriously limping.
This is not good!
