Problem Solved

Asked by Darshan Singh Sahri

I have just installed UBUNTU on my Vista computer Dell Dim E520. I went through the printer congiguration smoothly. The software detects the Brother MFC-5440CN printer and says it is ready.

Hoever, when I tried to print a small text file , nothing happened. In the configuration dialog box I did choose 'lpr' as my location.

Wonder if BUNTU needs its own driver for the printer. if so, where can I find one. There are so many sites promising to remote check your drivers that it is hard for me to see which one is servicable.

Thanks and greetings of the season.

Darshan,

Google search shows this as a common problem for owners of the multi-function printer.

There is a bug in ubuntu for the drivers here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cupsys/+bug/85539

And this comment in the Ubuntu forums may have the answer you seek:

Hi Harvey,

Thanks a lot for your help. My ubuntu is version 7.04.04. I thought I will
try to use your procedure for modifying printer. This is what happened;
when I tried to execute the third command of your code I got an error
message saying no such file exists. I went ahead any way. The ppd file
needed in the last command could not be found. I did get a message that my
printer has been successfully modified . However it is not good enough to
make the printer work. Thanks for your prompt help though.

With greetings of the season.

Darshan

Darshan,

A minor correction, it's not my work. All I did was find it and point the way =)

If this was the command that failed:
    sudo apt-get install csh

then all you need to do is add the correct repositories. Open Software Sources
(System > Administration > Software Sources)

then check everything on the first tab. Afterwards, try running through the entire sequence again.

Hi Darshan,

I am sorry for not being clear. I meant you should mark the question status Solved, not change the title to solved.

If you look at the top, the question still shows 'Answered' not 'Solved'.

Thanks,

Harvey
