cannot install lexmark printer

a friend gave me a lexmark x1195 printer with software but i don't know how to install disc on abuntu when i plug it in to usb it does not auto detect should it? i am not plugging this into the printer outlet i would need a adapter is this my problem? thanks

1) you cannot use the disk provided. It's for windows.
2) lexmark has a very poor record with Linux. Be sure to send them a letter asking for better Linux support.
3) you can check here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardwareSupportComponentsPrinters/LexmarkPrinters to see if there is a solution to your issue
4) the new version (gutsy) will be released in about 3 weeks. It is supposed to have better support for printers. It may or may not help in your case. Hopefully it will.
5) tip - HP printers work really well.
