canon LBP 2900 network printer installation

Asked by Rajiv

Hai,
I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 in one of my systems. I want to make it a print server in my network, where most of the client systems are MS XP/ Windows 7.
In Ubuntu I want to install my Canon LBP 2900 laser jet printer and also Samba, so that it will be accessible to the Windows
Systems.
Please give me step by step instructions so that I can install those without any error. I am new to Ubuntu, so I find it a little bit difficult.

Thanks

if you installed samba the printer is already shared

just go onto the windows systems and click start -> run

then type

\\ubuntu_hostname_here

if you are unsure of the hostname, in a terminal on Ubuntu you can run:

hostname

and you will be told

when you type this into Windows, you will see the printer, right click it and select connect, you will then be asked for the Windows driver for the printer.

You can now print to the printer.

To install the Cacnon LBP 2900 printer in Ubuntu, you really need to proceed with this guide. I had to do it for 2-3 setups Ubuntu+Canon LBP2900. The guide is very useful, just follow it step by step.

kobus, please create your own question. This is regarding a Canon printer install. Please refrain from using the phrase "network with an old PC"as it means NOTHING. If you mean filesharing then say filesharing. If you can ping a remote system then they are networked and it tells us ZERO about what the connection is for which "networking between" doesn't tell us.

Can you help with this problem?
