Try this website: http://www.fsf.org/resources/hw/printers

While there are other printers that work with Ubuntu, the printers listed there should work with all free software, which is a greater guarantee that they will work.

HP printers are very supported. You can consult:

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/supported_devices/index.html

You can also consult:

http://www.openprinting.org/printer_list.cgi

To see if a specific printer you have seen will play nice.

Steer clear of crap from Canon / some Lexmarks as they hate Linux.

HP is a very safe bet though.

I've used various Linux distributions with various HP injet printers and never found one not to be supported. I have used Epson inkjet printers much less, but when I did, they worked. I would never buy a Lexmark or Cannon printer, I've heard too many tales of woe from those who did.

If you can't return the Lexmark, the following address can tell you, in theory, whether getting it to work is likely:

http://www.linuxprinting.org/printer_list.cgi?make=Lexmark
