Try this URL for drivers for your Epson. The BX300F is listed there.

I've been to the page but as I'm not a computer buff I don't understand the READ ME installation instructions. I don't know about "root privileges", which files to download for ubuntu 8.04, and what commands to give in the terminal to get the whole thing going. It seems there are other things I also have to download, configure and install for it all to work, but hopefully I'm wrong! I don't suppose I can do it via the synaptic manager? Isn't there an easy step by step foolproof way of presenting the instructions? I really don't want to have to resort to opening Windows just to print!!! Any simple help/instructions would greatly help. Thanks for solving my other question. Keep up the good work, it's much appreciated. I've been playing around trying to get the damned printer working for 2 days!!

I have had a look at the site. There is a .deb file available and that is the one that you have to download. Remember for future use that Ubuntu is based on Debian and "deb" files are very easy to install just by a double click.
Root privileges means that (in Ubuntu) you use "sudo" (super user do) before a command that requires root privileges.

Still in a terminal, copy and paste:
sudo dpkg -i --force-
you will be asked for your password.
If the system complains about missing libraries, please take notes.

Good morning Guy,
Great to read of your success so far.
With your printer powered ON in a terminal type: pipslite-install
This will generate a necessary file (see section 6.3 of the Readme) and may entail a reboot.
You know, the installation for the scanner portion is still to come.

Hola Andre
I did what you said and the first pipslite install window that appeared said: Collected printer info required to build PPD file. I clicked on continue and got the following: PPD file has been registered to usr/share/ppd.
Printer name to be registered to CUPS is Stylus OfficeBX 300F. Please register the printer to CUPS!
Question: how do I do that?
I tried rebooting and the printer still didn't print anything but the self-test page. Is this because I need to register it with CUPS before it prints?
Hope I'm not driving you up the wall!

The printer is already on the database with CUPS as you mentioned above.
Check your settings in System, Administration, Printing to see that the Epson is identified there.
Then go to System, Administration, Users and Groups, unlock with your password, click on your name to highlight the entry, click on Properties and then on the User Privileges tab. Check that Manage Printers is ticked. Then close.
... and NO, you are not driving me up the wall. Long range help is always difficult to provide and because we all live in different parts of the world there will be gaps because of time zone differences. As my day nears its end, perhaps Marco will lead you further.

Great !!!!
Would yo please outline what you did to achieve this? It could be helpful to others.
Now for the scanner:
Before you do anything else, you must install "XSane Image Scanner: which you will find in Applications, Add/Remove.
Then go back to http://
To install this file via a terminal type: sudo dpkg --install iscan_2.
Don't be too hasty to delete files from your file system. To delete a file from your Garbage bin can be done in several ways - try this first: In a terminal type "sudo nautilus" (without the quotes) and then delete your trash.

I have never tried to set up fax on my multi-function centre (HP) so I cannot help you there except to provide you with some URLs:
http://
http://
There is also GFax (available in Add/Remove).
Since you are running Hardy Heron, you should not be getting updates for the previous version Gutsy Gibbon. Go to System, Administration, Software Sources and open the Updates tab. On the bottom of that screen under Release upgrade, select "Long term support releases only". Then close.
New questions should be posted as such (otherwise this thread will never be solved and reach a conclusion).

Hi Andre
You're not going to believe it, but after upgrading to ubuntu 8.10 the printer doesn't work again. The scanner works fine. I think that during installation of the 8.10, there were a couple of windows giving me to replace or keep some files or maybe configurations. I probably did something wrong there. What's your advice?
