If you use Linux, you should have looked at what was supported and was going to give you less grief.

Hardware manufacturers do not embrace "Alternative" systems than Windows as the masses uses Windows so they make a lot more money supporting it. So others get left by the wayside unfortunately. Some companys fully embrace Linux (HP and Nvidia are great examples here) and even have sections of their team dedicated to developing Linux drivers.

Next time you buy hardware I STRONGLY suggest researching the hardware you propose to acquire to see how painful it will be to setup.

Most HP printers require next to zero config. The guide given by Andre Mangan seems sound

i've downloaded the 'fedora 9 rpms' as suggested to my desktop, there's
pips-st20-SuSE10.3-3.1.0-CG.tgz
pips-common-3.1.0.tar.gz
i've then gone to terminal, and typed in the instructions
as follows, however

sandra@sandra-laptop:~$ 'alien --scripts --keep-version pips-*.rpm'
bash: alien --scripts --keep-version pips-*.rpm: command not found
sandra@sandra-laptop:~$

all i get is command nor found , what should i do now?

Hello Sandra,
Yes, I agree that the HowTo from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=964784 is asking for alot from someone new to Linux.
The rpm packaging format is used by several Linux distributions but Ubuntu, being based on the Debian system prefers to use the deb packaging format which installs after a double click on the deb file.
Alien is a program that translates rpm into deb format.

Regarding your printer, the site given by actionparsnip "http://linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Epson-Stylus_S20" does have some printer drivers listed and you can try one of these. I assume that you are using a 32 bit system rather than a 64 bit - 32 bit is the most widely used. So, you need to download the "x86 32 bit (DEB for LSB 3.2)" file and save it to your Desktop. Then double click on it and it will install. Hopefully that will drive your printer.

I understand, since your previous Epson printer worked in Ubuntu, your assumption that the new one would work as well. I have always used HP printers which mostly work out of the box. This is especially so with today's HP printers which have Linux driver support from HP. This information is provided just in case you can return the Epson to the retailer.
