printer driver installation on ubuntu 8.10

Asked by coskibum

I have an older Dell 4100 P3 384mb running Ubuntu 8.10 on a three computer network at home. One box is XP sp3, the other is a imac 2.8 Core 2 Duo. I just bought a Epson workforce 600 printer and need some help with the print drivers. Ubuntu found the printer on the network and when I was asked to pick a driver, the closest was a stylust 600 driver. When I tried it, it failed. I un-installed the printer from the available printers. I called Espon and they pointed me to sourceforce.net which has a new driver. My question is in the notes it said I must remove older CUPS with Gutenprint on a non-Macintosh system, and are upgrading from an earlier version of Gutenprint or Gimp-Print, please read this note carefully as there are special procedures that you should follow in addition to the normal procedure of running cups-genppdupdate. (http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?group_id=1537&release_id=649090). Can I remove this through the repository by removing all Gutenprint and Cups packets or must I remove them through line command? Since I a newbie on Ubuntu, I'm worried about screwing something up. Second question is there are two different packets ones a tar.bz2 and the other is ub.dmg. (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=1537&package_id=273638) I'm assuming that I would use the latter. The next question is how do I install it? I'm been a windows boy until now and want to learn.

Any all help would be much appreciated...

tar.bz2 will be for Linux and ub.dmg will be for Mac OS X.

It might also be worth a look at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1015830 which has links to a .deb file which you could download and double click to install it.

Andy

Thanks for the tip on the proper download. The forum thread talks about an older driver. When I called Espon, they said that this is the newest and best driver for the unit. Still need help with removal of the old Cups and Gutenprint and install of the newer driver.

Thanks again...
