printer won't print

Asked by Janice Scott

I'm a newbie, so probably have something completely wrong.
I use a Brother MFC-5840CN and have (I think) downloaded the drivers and CUPS wrapper from the Brother website.
When I I try to print, the printer displays 'Receiving data' but nothing prints.
One of your FAQs refers to a Brother printer; the answer was to remove all CUPS and reinstall. But when I try to remove CUPS from the 'add/remove applications', only two show up - both are printer configuration GUI GTK front end, one to manage print jobs, the other to configure printer, and neither can be removed. At least, not by those means - and I've no idea what I'm doing with the synaptics package manager. Can you help, please?

Synaptics has a proper Search button aswell as a Quick Search feature but you might have to full-screen Synaptic to see it.

When you've found the Cups things you want to install then right clicking on the package gives you the option to completely remove which is important to do in this kind of scenario because it removes all the configuration files and preferences that the package would otherwise leave behind.

Sorry i can't help with the printer problem but if you are asked to install certain packages even from a legit site like that then it's still always best to look up if the package is also available through Synaptics or Add/Remove as they integrate it better unless you're an expert (which i'm not)

Good luck with this

If you are still having trouble with this then please post it as a new question. Only the most recent questions tend to get looked at so posting/reposting a question just before america arrives online after work/school gives the best chance of getting a good few answers.

Sorry this was a standard message i send out. I usually hope that people in your position just take the hint and re-post the question, if timed right then you usually get quite a few answers. I'm still nt sure about printer issues but some people seem quite good so please try again.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

I think I would have managed it myself if I'd been able to remove all the printer files as you suggested. But couldn't fihure out how to do this since the printer never appeared in the 'add/remove' list. So I told the pros to do that and handed them the sheet I'd downloaded from the Brother site with step-by-step moves, and told them the two drivers they needed were on the desktop. They seemed to manage quite quickly.....

Thanks for your help.

All good wishes,
Janice.
