i cant print or install a printer other than the default PDF print-to

i have tried installing via System> Administration> Printing but that does not work as it does not even run...it just tries to run then stops as soon as it starts. I have been tryin to install a HP photosmart as well as a Laserjet but cant. Please SOS.b.
