My Lexmark E330 won't print

Asked by David George

I have installed a driver from the Lexmark web site for my E330 laser printer but am still unable to print anything. I get the following error message when I try to print the test page: CUPS server error
There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'client-error-document-format-not-supported'.

I would be grateful for any help.

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo gedit /etc/cups/mime.convs

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

go to the end of file and remove the "#" from beginning of the row:

#application/octet-stream application/vnd.cups-raw 0 -

save and exit

Please check and do the same at the end of /etc/cups/mime.types, type:

sudo gedit /etc/cups/mime.convs

Then restart cupsd, type:

sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart

Hope this helps

Thanks for this. Can you confirm the "sudo" instructions as they appear to be the same?

Sorry i made a typo...

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo gedit /etc/cups/mime.convs

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

go to the end of file and remove the "#" from beginning of the row:

#application/octet-stream application/vnd.cups-raw 0 -

save and exit

Please check and do the same at the end of /etc/cups/mime.types, type:

sudo gedit /etc/cups/mime.types

Then restart cupsd, type:

sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart

OK - I have removed the "#" from the first row and see this when I open /etc/cups/mime.types

#
# Raw print file support...
#
# Comment the following type to prevent raw file printing.
#

application/octet-stream

There is no "#" to remove and I get this "sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart
sudo: /etc/init.d/cups: command not found" when I try to restartcupsd.

Any further thoughts?

I get this after the reinstall command "Package cups is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package cups has no installation candidate"

which release of Ubuntu are you using... ?
Copy and paste the result of:

cat /etc/issue

BTW you can search the package related to cups by typing:

aptitude search cups

and to view your installed cups packages typing:

dpkg -l | grep -i cups | grep -i ii

Thank you

I probably will in due course but as it means nothing to me at the moment I will continue in your capable hands!

I really appreciate the help so far.

These are packages related to cups into Ubuntu 8.04.1 Hardy
http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=cups&searchon=names&suite=hardy&section=all

I use Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid right now and might there are little command differences so please try:

sudo apt-get --reinstall install cupsys

and reboot your pc.

hope this helps

OK - done that and still getting the original error message when I try to print the test page and no response from the printer when I try to print anything else.
What now?

Here the Lexmark driver for E330 but Ubuntu isn't found
http://downloads.lexmark.com/perl/downloads/downloads.cgi?ccs=229:1:0:449:0:0

Here the supported Lexmark printer list...
http://openprinting.org/printer_list.cgi?make=Lexmark

Can you try different model (near E330) and retry...

http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Lexmark-E332n

Hope this helps a bit

The driver for the E332n is the same as the one I have already downloaded and installed - Debian GNU/Linux 3.1. I have reinstalled it but still no printing. It looks like it's going to have to be a new printer or a return to XP.
Thank you for the time you have spent trying to help.
