install printer driver

Asked by Paul

I have a Samsung CLX-3175 on my home network. I can see it on the network. Samsung provided a CD which has a Linux directory and an install script, which I ran (or tried to). Can't figure out how to load/install the driver / PPD files from the CD. It's been probably 15 years since I worked on a Berkley UNIX system and I'm very rusty. Any advice would be appreciated.

Just point your browser on:

When asked for ppd point the ppd file on the CD

Thanks! I had no idea CUPS existed. Hadn't seen reference to it in my book.

I did as suggested, now I've got the error:

"Unable to start filter "rastertosamsungsplc" - No such file or directory."

Print jobs go into the queue, but never go to the printer

I'm contemplating trying to delete the printer and to re-install through CUPS. Would that be a good idea?

Yes why not. Try it

Regarding the error you have it is the first time I see it so I am not sure how to interpret it.

I deleted and reinstalled the printer but still get the error message:

"Unable to start filter "rastertosamsungsplc" - No such file or directory."

and print jobs just sit in the queue pending.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks

Probably an obsolete or incompatible ppd. I couldn't find a suitable ppd on cups or linuxprinting site. You can try your luck on one of the generic drivers or one under the sansung section (in setup) but that's trial and error really and there is no way to tell which and if one of them is going to work

Have you tried through System > Administration > Printing > New Printer?

There is a driver for CLX-3160 which might work, or you can search for it on the CD from there.

Turns out I was my own worst enemy. I tried to install from the CD because it had a Linux directory, but that didn't work out. Once I downloaded the driver from Samsung and installed it correctly following the instructions on the web site, the printer configured right up through the standard Ubuntu printer config menu option and works perfectly. I just hadn't got all the right files into the right places prior to trying to add the printer.

Thanks to all for your assistance.
