hp laserjet 1020 won't work in Ubuntu 14.04

Asked by Raffi Aftandelian

I successfully install HP Laserjet 1020 using hplip. The printer will successfully print a test page, then it won't print after that (it'll pend or be "processing" the page.)

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling- all to no avail.

Unfortunately, that procedure doesn't work.

The output of
lsb_release -a; uname -a; apt-cache policy hplip

is

Hello,

Which way did you install your printer?

I suggest you ckeck if you have the hplip package. You find it in the software center (or if you have unity, I think also in the launcher).

The developers site is http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/supported_devices/index.html

There is a very long list of supported printers and I found yours in the list, so I'm pretty sure it will work for you.

Good luck
Enrico

Hi!
I've tried hplip several times, different versions, including the latest version, including uninstalling and then reinstalling hplip and it hasn't worked. i've read that hplip is buggy, sorry i can't find the link to that statement.

i was hoping that this alternative offered by Mark Rijckenberg would work; and it hasn't. I see that in the comments on the page he posted that it has worked for others...

HPlip did work for me when I had a previous version of Ubuntu (version 13, i believe).

If you tell what problem you got for Mark's installation instructions, this might give a hint where to dig further.

The problem I have is that it simply doesn't print. It doesn't even print a test page...It just pends or "processing"

I remove foo2zjs and re-installed it and still didn't print.

At the next to last line -
after typing system-config-printer the printer window opens and I see an icon for the hp laserjet. however, terminal then just has a blinking cursor and there is no command prompt. so i opened a separate window and typed the last two commands

 # check /var/log/syslog for any errors related to foo2zjs driver:

and

 tail /var/log/syslog

the output for tail /var/log/syslog is
