Installing a Sharp AR M 237

Asked by JPoff

I need to install a network printer Sharp AR M 237. I found a linux driver that appeared to work until the test page printed said,"PostScript printing not licensed for this printer." I no this is untrue because we use from many Window machine. I seen a post that talked about changing it from a CUPS printer,
you have to set it up as LPR. How is this done? Where do I go and make these changes.

Howdy Mike-d. here,
(Disclaimer) I usually just file bug reports and try to answer question every once in a while.
Left click System->Administration->Printing
Left click New Printer
It will search for Printers.
Select connection: (5th choice down) Left click on LPD/LPR Host or Printer
add Host info or Probe and queue Info if you know what that means.
Good Luck, Ask for more info, if you need more info.

I change to the LPR type and my only option is a linux driver that is a Postscript and the printer does not have this capability. I guess the main question is, does the printer need to have the PS option before linux will work on it?

Here's what worked for me on an Ubuntu machine and a Linux Mint (quasi Ubuntu).

The printer was found on the network and set up using the IP address and port 9100.
i.e "socket://192.168.1.28:9100"

The default driver for this machine did not work for my machines. What does work is choosing the following driver.

Generic > Generic PCL 6/PCL XL Printer > (default) Generic PCL 6/PCL XL Printer - CUPS Guttenberg Print

Once I dumped the driver over to the generic one above, all was well.

Can you help with this problem?
