Brother MFC-440CN printer not working in Ubuntu 12.04

Asked by Rodney Dahl on 2013-06-28

I reinstalled my Brother MFC440CN printer as a local printer.

Once I click Print I instantly get a pop-up message stating "Printing Cancelled" (Operating system is 12.04LTS 32 bit. )

Printer works fine in Windows 7 but I much prefer Ubuntu.

In System settings/Printer IP address is local host and Model is Generic text-only printer When I click on "Print Test Page" nothing happens.

I have installed brother-lpr-drivers-bh7 (LPR drivers for bh7 brother printers and confirmed that the MFC440CN is a bh7 printer)

Additionally installed " brother-cups-wrapper-bh7"

Any insights appreciated.

Did you install the driver as well as the wrapper? You need both debs installing

I installed two packages brother-lpr-drivers-bh7 and the wrappers package
using Synaptic Package Manager. Since this did not work I opted to go to
the Brothers site for Linux, downloaed the two packages for the MFC440-CN.

The would not install until I uninstalled the bh7 packages. I successfully
installed the deb drivers from the Linux site and successfully printed a
test page.

Here is a link to the site:

Problem solved. Thank you.
