Did you grab the debs from the Brother site?

Ralph DeWitt (ralphdewitt-0) said : #2

Yes I got the debs from the Brother site. I tried as best as I could to follow the confusing (to me Pre required procedures). This ended up with the printer being seen in //localhost:631 and being configurable. The problem was the cup file was corrupted and did not point to the usb port. In the future I would like to get the printers WIFI working for the other devices I have. But the problem for now is to get the printer working on the usb port on this machine. One problem at a time.

mkdir ~/Brother
cd ~/Brother
wget http://www.brother.com/pub/bsc/linux/dlf/mfcj6710dwlpr-3.0.0-1.i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i ./mfcj6710dwlpr-3.0.0-1.i386.deb
wget http://www.brother.com/pub/bsc/linux/dlf/mfcj6710dwcupswrapper-3.0.0-1.i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i ./mfcj6710dwcupswrapper-3.0.0-1.i386.deb
sudo apt-get -f install
cd
rm -r ~/Brother

Delete the Brother printer in the printer config, power off the printer and reboot, then power on the printer and set it up

In the cog menu in the top right, click printer (or if it's not there then go to settings then printers) right click the printer and hit delete

Ralph DeWitt (ralphdewitt-0) said : #9

I used the system setting/printers to delete the Brother printer. I shutdown the printer/rebooted the system. Then powered on the printer. I then went to system settings/printer to install the Brother printer. Got as far as selecting the driver. The print driver was not listed in the list for Brother printers.

try:

http://localhost:631

Add it there

Ralph DeWitt (ralphdewitt-0) said : #11

No joy the printer is there but the model/driver does not appear in the list

Ralph DeWitt (ralphdewitt-0) said : #12

I am looking at pre requird proceedure 3 and am woundering if maybe we should create a simlink between /etc/initd/cups and etc/init.d/lpd on my system etc/cups/ppd is empty, etc/cups/printer.conf denies me access opt/brother/printer contains the wrong brother printer folder. Hopes this helps a little.

if you run:

sudo updatedb; locate brother_mfcj6710dw_printer_en.ppd

What is output?

Ralph DeWitt (ralphdewitt-0) said : #14

[ralph@ralph-HP-Pavilion-g7-Notebook-PC ~]$ sudo updatedb; locate brother_mfcj6710dw_printer_en.ppd
[sudo] password for ralph:
/opt/brother/Printers/mfcj6710dw/cupswrapper/brother_mfcj6710dw_printer_en.ppd
/usr/share/cups/model/Brother/brother_mfcj6710dw_printer_en.ppd
/usr/share/ppd/Brother/brother_mfcj6710dw_printer_en.ppd
[ralph@ralph-HP-Pavilion-g7-Notebook-PC ~]$

ok run through the install process, but when you are asked to set the driver, state you want to use a PPD and point it to:
/usr/share/cups/model/Brother/brother_mfcj6710dw_printer_en.ppd

Ralph DeWitt (ralphdewitt-0) said : #16

Used localhost//631 to add printer. Pointed to the ppd. Still no joy. This is the printer discription now:
Description: Brother MFC-J835DW
Location: laptop
Driver: Brother MFC-J6710DW CUPS (color, 2-sided printing)
Connection: usb://Brother/MFC-J835DW?serial=BROG2F202375
Defaults: job-sheets=none, none media=na_letter_8.5x11in sides=one-sided

Still does not print.

How is this printer connected to your computer? Wifi, LAN or USB?

Instructions on how to configure your printer from Brother are here:
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/instruction_prn1a.html

Ralph DeWitt (ralphdewitt-0) said : #18

Hi warren:
When I check for the printer I get the following results:

ralph@ralph-HP-Pavilion-g7-Notebook-PC:~$ dpkg -l | grep Brother
ii mfcj6710dwcupswrapper 3.0.0-1
i386 Brother CUPS Inkjet Printer Definitions
ii mfcj6710dwlpr 3.0.0-1
i386 Brother lpr Inkjet Printer Definitions
ii printer-driver-ptouch 1.3-4ubuntu1
amd64 printer driver Brother P-touch label printers
ralph@ralph-HP-Pavilion-g7-Notebook-PC:~$

This is not the printer mfcj835dw that I have installed using usb. This
system is a new install of Kubuntu 12.10 using the guided use whole disk
option. It is updated. I have held off instaling kde 4.9.3 till I solve
this problem. Should we do the pre required step #3 that is a simlink that
does not seem to be required for this model.

It looks like you have installed the wrong printer and looking at post 3 I think I can see why

cd $HOME
wget http://www.brother.com/pub/bsc/linux/dlf/mfcj835dwlpr-3.0.0-1.i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i ./mfcj835dwlpr-3.0.0-1.i386.deb
rm ./mfcj835dwlpr-3.0.0-1.i386.deb
wget http://www.brother.com/pub/bsc/linux/dlf/mfcj835dwcupswrapper-3.0.0-1.i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i ./mfcj835dwcupswrapper-3.0.0-1.i386.deb
rm ./mfcj835dwcupswrapper-3.0.0-1.i386.deb
sudo apt-get -f install

Should do it

then go into http://localhost:631 and configure it

Ralph DeWitt (ralphdewitt-0) said : #20

Warren:
Followed your steps and I found the printer and printdriver, their were two of
them listed, I tried both with no joy. The printer just did not print. I also
noticed that localhost/631 did not required a log in. I also tried system
settings printer config and it also did not as for password. In anycase the
print drivers that show are correct it just does not print. Also noticed no
print applet comes up in the tray. I did a grep for Brother and got this

lph@ralph-HP-Pavilion-g7-Notebook-PC:~$ sudo dpkg -l | grep Brother
[sudo] password for ralph:
ii mfcj6710dwcupswrapper 3.0.0-1
i386 Brother CUPS Inkjet Printer Definitions
ii mfcj6710dwlpr 3.0.0-1
i386 Brother lpr Inkjet Printer Definitions
ii mfcj835dwcupswrapper 3.0.0-1
i386 Brother CUPS Inkjet Printer Definitions
ii mfcj835dwlpr 3.0.0-1
i386 Brother lpr Inkjet Printer Definitions
ii printer-driver-ptouch 1.3-4ubuntu1
amd64 printer driver Brother P-touch label printers
ralph@ralph-HP-Pavilion-g7-Notebook-PC:~$

Hope this helps

I received a emai from Brother and it solved my problem. The solution was simple. I have a 64 bit system and the Brother printer needs 32 bit system. Their tool reinstalled the drivers and set up the printer bring in all the 32 bit stuff it need. Here is a copy of the email maybe it will help someone else.

Brother Customer:

We have reviewed your request and we would be glad to offer you the
assistance you need. I will be glad to help you with your issues
printing. I was able to print fine. I install the driver using the
following steps:
1. Install the standard C library for 32bit applications (e.g.
glibc.i686(Fedora), libstdc++ for 32bit(openSUSE))
2. Create some folders if it is required
2-1. Create /usr/lib/cups/filter if it does not exist.
Command1: mkdir /usr/lib/cups
Command2: mkdir /usr/lib/cups/filter

2-2. Create /usr/share/cups/model if it does not exist
Command: mkdir /usr/share/cups/model

After you complete the steps above use the brother installation tool
from:
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/faq_prn.html#f00104

We hope this information will be useful to you. If we can be of further
assistance, please let us know.
