Kodak all in one printer won't work

Asked by Charles Kuenzi

I have a new Dell Inspiron 530 with 7.10 factory pre-loaded. Thanks Dell!! I am brand new to Ubuntu but not to computers. I have a new Kodak 5500 all in one printer which worked fine on Vista and XP but refuses to function with Ubuntu. The system recognizes the printer but that's as far as it goes. I went into the Synaptic package manager and did the third party software CD add but got an error message saying the CD could not be loaded. I can open the CD on the desktop and look at the files so there's nothing wrong with the hardware. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, currently there is no linux driver available from Kodak for 5000 series, and they aren't going to provide linux developers with the information they need to build one themselves.
It looks like they don't realize how fast Linux is growing.

Hi Mara, well that clears things up. Do I have any options other than returning the printer to Kodak?

Thanks for responding!!

Mara, can you recommend a good printer that's Linux compatible? I prefer an inkjet that can do double-sided printing but I'm open to anything.

Hi Charles,
I suggest you to take a look at http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting
In Printers section, if you search for all printers made by: HP you will see that there's plenty of compatible ones, in particular HP Business Inkjet series should be suitable for your needs (those can do double-sided printing).

Regards,
Mara

I did and I did :) Think I'm going to go with one of the HP 7000 series printers. You have been really helpful and during this process of getting acclimated to Ubuntu, I believe I've fallen in love with an operating system. After 20 years o being brainwashed by the Seattle folks, I want to take this moment to apologize to Bill Gates for not pouring any more money into his Windows cash cow. As I've already convinced two of my peers to switch to Linux, I have to believe that down the road, Microsoft is going to see an eroding market share to a system that is simply better. The Ubuntu theme seems to say it all. It just works!!!

Have a great holiday and thanks from Austin, Texas.

Charles

Recognition of USB Kodak ESP All-In-One Printers in Ubutnu but NOT functional, printable or Scannable. Use of these devices in VirtualBox has reported FULL access & functionality. The problem seems to be in the hardware access of Kodak chipset. Kodak needs to adapt chipset or design UNIX/LINUX software to hardware access. Similar problems to be reported with Texas Instruments hardware as well. We contacted Kodak about this issue & received the SAME yet GENERAL response. There are many who have asked of Kodak & pointed this shortcoming for over 5 years.

OK. We contacted Kodak about this & we got the same ALL around Double Talk AGAIN. With the introduction of Kodaks' NEW line Of All-In-One's, there is NO WAY they could not have seen this market! Here's the response we got;

WE ASKED KODAK----- Question: You NEED to begin development of UNIX/LINUX drivers. I am Co-Owner of a small business in Greeley, CO. USA that installs LINUX ONLY for customers & we DO a HIGH volume of business with many customers who have Kodak printers &/or scanners. After seeing our wonderful work & FREE software migration, they have NO problem leaving there Kodak equipment behind & going with HP equipment. We would prefer buying NEW ESP ALL-IN-ONE devices from you, but if NO drivers, NO MONEY FOR YOU! Hopefully, you will consider the MILLIONS of dollars you are loosing.... My name is Jay P. KODAKS RESPONE-----

[I]Greetings Jay ,

Thank you for visiting the Kodak web site and your inquiry regarding Kodak support for Linux operating system with Kodak products.

Currently there is no support for Kodak products on the Linux OS by Kodak. Our Kodak software engineers are well aware of the Linux operating system. We appreciate your concern for this operating system and interest in enabling Kodak products to work with it.

We are glad to be of service and are here for you if you need us in the future. If you do reply, please be sure to include any previous e-mail so we may assist you better.

Regards,

Eric H.

This is the SAME response they have given for the past 5 years pertaining to ANY of there equipment. It seems Kodak is acting like the Microsoft of the new millennium. END

I just tried to install a kodak all in one 5300 and I'm having the same issues. I guess I can't use it with ubuntu. What a shame. I'm new to ubuntu and so far I like it. I just wish that everything in the computer world wasn't so windows based.
Thanks to this forum i found my answers and I don't have to rub my head searching for answers. Thanks again Ubuntu community.
