install printer failed authentication (fetching device list) password fails

Asked by wim buys

I installed Ubuntu for some days ago. This was not easy. It seems to work now.
But I cannot install my printer.
Ubuntu does not recognize the printer automatically.
When I press 'add printer' the autentication (fetching device list) appears. But username and password donot work: I cannot get any further.
The printer is a Brother HL-1450, connected via LPT.
I red some commands on the net, but it didnot get me further (I donot understand the meaning of the commands).
Here is the answers I got:

xx@localhost:~$ sudo su
[sudo] password for xx:
root@localhost:/home/xx# tail -f /var/log/messages
tail: cannot open `/var/log/messages' for reading: No such file or directory

Hello,

Go to the Synaptic Package Manager and type in Brother. Search for HL1450 and mark for installation. It will install the printer.

Regards,

Allan :)

http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/06/synaptic-package-manager-dropped-from-ubuntu-11-10
my version of ubuntu is 12.04 LTS.
Thats why I could not find it :)
Ubuntu still cannot find the printer. The printer is connected via a big (old fasion) printercable. Not USB.
The printer is powered on.
When I try to search in the systemsettings - printer -add printer, ubuntu pops up with a autentication. Thsi autentication doesnot work properly and therefor I am stuck.

Is it save to run these commands?
Can I restore to normal again if it doesnot work?

again the same link as before: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/before.html#prereq:
I triedPre-required Procedure (3) because my version of ubuntu er greater than 8.10 (I hope my version is a redhat based distrubution.)
Ubuntu answers following:

root@localhost:/home/xx# ln -s /etc/init.d/cups /etc/init.d/lpd
ln: failed to create symbolic link `/etc/init.d/lpd': File exists
root@localhost:/home/xx# "ln -s /etc/init.d/cups /etc/init.d/lpd"

Ok, I grabed the deb files from the brother site, and now there is a printer icon in the add printer item :)
But the printer doesnot work.
When I click on the icon it says m.o.: the connection is via USB.
This is en reality not the case: the printer is connected via a printerport. (long, big, flat)
When I try to correct this I have to authenticate, and that is still imossible: Ubuntu doesnot recognize my password as correct in regard to printers.

I works!
I had to add my administrator user to lpadmin too.
Now it works smoothly.
Thanks a lot, folks!
