Ubuntu 10.04, Canon BJC-240 printer no longer available for printing

Asked by sdtrott

I was using my Canon BJC-240 printer this morning and had printed several documents when quite suddenly, when I tried to print another document, the printer no longer appeared in the list of available printers. Instead, I was given only the option to "Print to File".

I had to reboot into Windows XP in order to finish printing my documents.

Later when I booted back into Ubuntu, the printer still did not show up as a printing option under System > Administration > Printing.

When I tried the trouble-shooting menu, I got a message stating that the CUPS service was stopped and that I needed to go to System > Administration > Services to activate the CUPS service.

The problem is that there is no such option under the System > Administration menu.

Apparently the help files with this version of Linux have not been kept up to date with the kernel updates.

I would appreciate any assistance in getting my printer back on line under Ubuntu.

try:

sudo service cups start

Instead. Same deal.
