"Waiting for printer to become available" ... forever

I'm running Linux Mint 12. I just installed the .deb printer driver for my Brother HL-2270DW wireless printer, and installed the .deb CUPS wrapper driver (also from the brother web site). After going into the CUPS admin page in my browser and sending a test page, I get the status message "Waiting for printer to become available" and I don't get a test page printer. I have no idea how to diagnose the problem at this point.

Mint isn't supported here, this is Ubuntu support. Mint is not supported in any of theofficial Ubuntu channels, nor are any of the other ubuntu based distro you can name (like backtrack, pinguy and so on)
