driver for brother MFC-7420 printer

Asked by atar

Hi there!!

I have a Brother MFC-7420 Model AIO machine, and when I connected it to my computer, Ubuntu searched for a driver for it, but Ubuntu didn't find an appropriate driver for it, so I tried to install it manually, but when I opened the "Printers" window at the system menu bar, it always pop up a window that asking me for a username and a password and the username field is filled with the "root" string, but the password field is empty. and I tried to insert to the password field my own user account password, but it prompt me that the password may be incorrect. and even I click on the "cancel" button in order to exit from this error message, it don't work and Ubuntu pop up again the message that ask for a password.

In my opinion is that this is a bug. but if someone here think otherwise, I'll be very happy to know.

Thanks in advance!!

atar.

Sounds like two separate questions you are asking, since you are (still?) trying to install a printer driver? I'm on Meerkat (10.10), but never had a problem with Brother printers in Linux. For that part of your question, I would recommend just carefully following instructions for their driver at http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/download_prn.html (your printer is listed, and the site has directions).

As far as this strange behavior goes with the root password, I would say keep asking on that one. Seems a little different than I have run into with older versions of Ubuntu.

Can you help with this problem?
